Preikestolen

This is also known in English as the Pulpit or the Preacher’s Rock. It is a plateau rock about 25 metres square situated overlooking Lysefjord and has a sheer vertical cliff af 600 metres down to the blue fjord waters. It is the principal attraction and the most visited site in Norway. Even though it is difficult to access it attracts about 150,000 tourists each year. It is just a summer resort and is inaccessible in the winter months.

You can go hiking here or hire a pony and go trekking for three hours. You can hire a boat and go fishing. There is a small short golf course. You are just 270 metres below the Pulpit Rock but this 270 metre hike can be very deceptive because on the way up you ascend and descend several times through sometimes very rugged paths extending your journey to almost three kilometres. It is really for the physically fit and healthy and you will need to be properly clad with strong hiking boots and a change of clothing because of rain or mist or sweat. You will also need to take some drinking water or other drink and maybe a small snack which you can consume while you sit and relax at one of the several sets or tables strtegically placed on your route. The climb up will take about two hours and on your way you will have some marvellous glimpses of the fjord below. The first part will be relatively easy but then it becomes more difficult although it has been somewhat improved. There were some suggestions about constructing an escalator from the fjord to accommodate tourists from cruisers but it was felt this would take away from the Pulpit Rock.
